Johan Carlsson Ström (b. 1985) was awarded the Beckers Art Award in 2026, a prize of 200,000 SEK that also includes a solo exhibition at Färgfabriken in Stockholm and KKAM Höganäs.
After graduating from HDK-Valand in 2024, he focused on painting, treating colour as a plastic material — working, shaping and manipulating it into both abstract and figurative forms. His works weave together imagery from film, the internet and archival sources with elements drawn from dollhouses and crime-scene models — environments that oscillate between fiction and everyday reality, between the familiar and the uncanny. With a muted palette and finely tuned compositions, he creates an atmosphere of presence and quiet wit, inviting viewers to sharpen their gaze and uncover the narrative that lies hidden beneath the surface.
