Ernst Billgren

7 June–17 August

This year’s summer exhibition features none other than Ernst Billgren

Since graduating from Valand Academy of Art and Design in Gothenburg in 1987 Ernst Billgren (1957) has occupied a unique position in the Swedish art scene with his humorous, ironic, verbal and visual assessments regarding taste and style. A commanding presence indeed!
Rumour has it that Ernst Billgren is a workaholic and that, at Valand, he was always first to arrive and last to leave. No time was to be wasted in the art of shattering the boundaries of art and aesthetics.

Ernst Billgren is, and wishes to be, a force transcending all conventions

In 2025 Ernst Billgren can best be described as our time’s combination of Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn – just as technically driven and gifted as those two men and, fittingly, resident in Evert Taube’s old studio apartment with its view over Slussen in Stockholm. Now it is the multifaceted artist Ernst Billgren who looks out over Stockholm, navigating seamlessly between literature, sculpture, painting, graphic art, glass, textiles, scenography and film – nothing is alien for him. Everything is possible, such as suddenly turning up under a new name or allowing someone else to decide the motifs of the paintings. Ernst Billgren is, and wishes to be, a force that transcends all conventions.

This summer’s exhibition has been created by Billgren at KKAM Studio in Höganäs

During autumn 2024 and spring 2025, Ernst Billgren has been active in the KKAM Studio, adding yet another string to his bow – pottery. Assisted by our staff, a number of sculptural pieces have been crafted and we are proud to be able to exhibit them together with additional works from Billgren’s rich production.

With Ernst Billgren in Höganäs, KKAM is continuing to open the Studio and the Museum’s exhibition rooms for artistic residencies, having started with Linn Fernström in 2023 and then with Jens Fänge in 2024. Well met on 7 June!

In addition to the exhibition at KKAM, Billgren has an exhibition this year at Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.
